Ownvance services: a financial plan, investing education and firm checks

Ownvance offers three services for private individuals, each a fixed-fee piece of work with a written scope. All three serve the same aim: money set aside for the shocks life brings, investing you understand before you begin, and no payment to anyone who hasn't been checked.

Which services does Ownvance offer?

Ownvance offers a personal financial plan, one-to-one investing education and a check on a firm or offer. You can take one on its own or combine them: a plan first, for example, then sessions on investing the money the plan shows you can leave alone. Each service page sets out what's included and what you receive.

Which service should you start with?

Begin with whatever is closest to a decision. If someone has offered you an investment or a trading platform, have that firm or offer checked first. If your money feels disorganised or you have no cushion, the plan comes first. If you have savings and want to understand investing, the sessions are the place to begin.

Where to start
Your situationStart with
Someone has contacted you with an investment, a trading platform or a 'manager'A check on that firm or offer
A new online friend or match keeps encouraging you to invest, often in cryptoA check on that firm or offer, and our guide to crypto and romance investment scams
You have no savings cushion, or you're not sure where your money goesA personal financial plan
You're paying off debts and trying to save at the same timeA personal financial plan, starting with which debts to clear first
Your savings are building up and you're wondering about investingA personal financial plan to see how much you could leave alone, then investing education
You already have an investing account but don't really understand its fees or risksInvesting education

What's included every time?

Whichever service you choose, Ownvance begins with an introductory consultation and a short engagement letter stating the fixed fee. After the work, we hand over everything we've prepared, such as spreadsheets, notes and written records, and go through each one with you. It all belongs to you, so you can keep using it on your own.

  • Files in formats you already use, such as a spreadsheet or a document, with no app or software to buy.
  • A short written summary of what we found and which questions are still open.
  • Time to go through everything together and ask about anything that isn't clear.

How long does each service usually take?

A personal financial plan usually takes one to two weeks. Investing education is usually a few sessions spread over two to four weeks. A check on a firm or offer usually takes two to five working days once we have the details. Your engagement letter confirms the dates for your own piece of work.

Typical lengths
ServiceUsual lengthWhat sets the pace
Personal financial planUsually 1 to 2 weeksHow quickly you can gather your income, spending and debt figures

These are typical lengths, not guarantees. The engagement letter confirms the dates for your piece of work.

What's outside the scope of our services?

We don't manage investments, choose products for you, hold or move money, or take commissions from anyone. We don't give tax or legal advice, and we can't recover money lost to a scam. When a decision needs a regulated financial adviser, a lawyer or a tax specialist, we tell you so and help you work out what to ask them.

How we're paid, and why it matters, is explained on how we work.
